There isn't a message in the music anymore. Rock has always had a message (Stick it to the Man, F.uck You, I Don't Wanna, etc) Rock has lost it's meaning, not only in the lyrics but the attitude is gone in the style of playing too. People aren't playing for anything anymore, there's no meaning.

I'll tell you why it sucks in three letters M-T-V. MTV has the largest influence on music and they only play things that they know has a chance to be played on pop stations. i'm talking bands like fall out boy, my chemical romance, paramore, and hinder, who suck so much but they play on the pop stations. mtv isn't trying to find the next thing, or reach into the underground they're trying to make the next big pop hit. so in summation, mainstream rock sucks because of mtv.

yea, most of today's music sucks. Why? I don't know. i suppose no one is inventing new stuff or improving anything from the past. so much of the teeny bopper singers all sound the same, all the pop punk sounds the same and even the rap is getting worse. Rather depressing looking at the current music scene.

I blame it on today's music industry. They are focusing on making money and not in the music.

this is like asking why people choose chocolate over vanilla. everyone has their own taste. people listen to music because they like it. you cant assume your musical tastes are better than everyones, because you listen to what you like and other people listen to what they like. yes a band may suck..there are many such bands...but some people may not think so, they enjoy listening to it, and thats good for them. im sure there is tons of music you listen to and love that millions of people dislike...that doesnt make them terrible people or have sucky tastes in music.

There was just a write up in the LA Times yesterday about how there isnt any originality in alot of the music these days and artists are getting sued left and right for 'stealing' songs or copying riffs.

To me, it seems like there are alot of good single SONGS out there - but not enough good BANDS with alot of good songs in their repertoire.

Way back when, there used to be this radio format called Album-Oriented Rock. They wouldn't just play the singles; they would delve deeper into some of the album tracks and find stuff that was often more interesting or challenging. That's how Led Zeppelin's "Stairway to Heaven" became so big; it never was released as a single.
That format seems to be as dead as John Bonham now. Too bad - now the radio only plays what the song promoters from the record labels are pushing.

If people chose mediocrity, it's only because the corporations control what we hear. Most don't have the time to dig deep. Still, I don't think the overall scene is as bleak as you make it out to be.

all music is getting depressing. the music from the 70's and 80's all had a happy feeling. and they all had meaning to them. todays music sucks because its all about the same thing. rap is taking over and rock is going down hill. there needs to be a band that comes out with an old school rock and roll sound to save us from this crap.

1). MTV...the cancer to society...it abandoned music for dumb reality TV shows. Viewership has dropped thanks to the internet. If you want to see what new low MTV has reached, just take a look at the VMAs...with the exception of Fall Out Boy, Linkin Park, White Stripes, U2, and Green Day, there's absolutely no rock representation among awards...just a slew of some of the worst rap and pop to have come out in decades. This is why people think rock is dead.

2). It's taste. People have to get it in their head that these "LED ZEPPELINS" and "AC/DCs" and "PINK FLOYDS" and "NIRVANAS" and "SMASHING PUMPKINS" time has passed. People today like Nickelback, Disturbed, White Stripes, Godsmack, Fall Out Boy, Linkin Park, Evanescence, Muse, Red Hot Chili Peppers, My Chemical Romance, Breaking Benjamin, Three Days Grace, 30 Seconds To Mars, KoRn, Velvet Revolver, The Used, Plain White T's,

3). Finally, where are you getting your rock music? If you are listening to your top 40/pop radio station or MTV, then well...you get what you feel is sucky music. Check your rock stations for a while. Maybe you'll find something you like. Can't stand radio? Go online. Join up some music communities...choose a style of music you like, and have fun.

Seriously though, what rock bands do you want people to listen to?

Look at the crap that is shoved down the youth's throats on MTV, VH1 and mainstream radio. Most people don't have people in their lives who can turn them on to more obscure music, thank god for satellite radio. It may be the one thing that saves their minds.

It's because the people allow themselves to be force fed the crap that the record companies are trying to pass off as music it's because slowly but surely over the years the record companies have taken away artistic control of the stuff bands are recording. ie. Listen kid if you want to sign you are going to have to play by our rules. loosely translated if you want to play you will play what we want you to.
    ITS ALL CORPORATE BULLSHIT!!!!!!

Mainstream music always had a high percentage of crap. What survives after the test of time tends to be better. People may feel nostalgia for the Monkees, but the Doors, Jimi Hendrix and others became classics. In 20 years we'll (or you will, I won't likely be alive then) see what has survived the test of time from current music and what was just a passing fad.
