It's real but the guests are coached and only on there if there is a high probability that they will react badly with each other.

I heard the people are paid to say some of the things they come up with, just for ratings, I think it was real when he first started his show, but now I think it is rehearsed!

I actually met someone who was on that show! I am serious! It was supposed to be another of those love triangle shows. They came from Kamloops, BC to Chicago. Yes, they are told what to do and say for maximum entertainment(?) value. They also have a wardrobe department for women with "break away" outfits (serious) so that tearing off of garments comes from their stock. I used to think that show was a chance for bad improv actors to get a break, but real people do go on and air their dirty laundry. They do not win anything, except get put up for a couple of nights and food, that is it. Oh, and the chance to make a fool out of themselves on national television.

I've heard former guests say they were encouraged to act badly but between breaks everyone was quite friendly and civilized.
